Creating Activities

Learn how to create activities with setup instructions, coaching points, and visual diagrams.

2 min readUpdated Apr 17, 2026

An activity is a single drill, exercise, or game that you can reuse across sessions. Each activity stores everything your staff needs to run it: setup instructions, execution steps, coaching points, and an optional visual diagram.

Create a new activity

  1. Go to Activities in the sidebar and click New Activity.
  2. Fill in the core fields:
    • Title -- a short, descriptive name (e.g., "3v2 Rush Drill").
    • Sport -- select your sport so the correct playing surfaces, drill categories, and skill tags are available. Planner.coach supports soccer, ice hockey, inline hockey, basketball, American football, baseball, softball, volleyball, rugby, lacrosse, field hockey, and more.
    • Description -- a brief overview of the drill's purpose and what it develops.
    • Setup Instructions -- how to arrange the space, where to place cones and equipment, and where players start.
    • Execution Steps -- the sequence of actions players perform. Number these so assistants can follow along.
    • Coaching Points -- the key things to watch for and correct during the drill.

Add equipment and tags

Use the Equipment field to list the gear needed (cones, bibs, goals, etc.). Add Tags to make the activity searchable -- for example, passing, warm-up, 1v1, or transition.

Draw a diagram

Click Open Canvas to launch the visual diagram editor. Select a playing surface, place player markers and equipment, draw movement paths with arrows, and add text labels. The diagram saves with the activity and appears in session plans and PDF exports.

See The Canvas Editor for a full walkthrough of the diagram tools.

Save and reuse

Click Save to add the activity to your library. From there you can:

  • Drag it into any session plan.
  • Duplicate it to create variations.
  • Share it as a community template (see Sharing & Community Templates).
  • Start from a pre-built template in the Activity Library instead of building from scratch.

Activity limits

The Free plan allows up to 15 activities. Upgrade to Pro or Club for unlimited activities. You can see your current usage on the dashboard or in the Activities list.

Pro: Hitting the 15-activity cap? Pro removes the limit so you can build a full drill library across every sport you coach. Compare plans
